In Freemasonry, the tools of the Craft are never merely objects. They are reminders, teachers, and quiet companions on the lifelong journey of self-improvement. Among these, the Level and the Plumb hold a special place, particularly in the lessons entrusted to the Wardens.
The image, The Wardens Jewels, captures this beautifully: “Tools of the Craft. Lessons for Life.” It reminds us that the true work of Freemasonry is not confined to the Lodge room. It is carried into our homes, our communities, our workplaces, and into every interaction we have with others.
The Level: Meeting on Common Ground
The Level teaches us to see others as equal.
In the Lodge, rank, status, wealth, profession, and worldly distinction are left at the door. We meet as Brothers, standing together on common ground. This lesson is one of the most powerful and enduring principles of Freemasonry.
To be “on the level” is to act fairly, honestly, and with respect. It calls us to treat every person with dignity, regardless of their position in life. In a world that often divides people by title, background, or circumstance, the Level reminds us that true Brotherhood is built on equality and mutual respect.
It challenges us to ask: Do we listen with humility? Do we judge with fairness? Do we remember that every Brother, and every person, has worth?
The Plumb: Standing Upright
The Plumb teaches us to keep ourselves upright.
It is a symbol of integrity, moral strength, and upright conduct. Just as a builder uses the plumb line to ensure that a structure stands straight and true, so must a Mason use the principles of the Craft to ensure that his character remains steady and honourable.
Integrity is not only shown in public moments. It is proven in private decisions, in difficult choices, and in the quiet discipline of doing what is right when no one is watching.
The Plumb reminds us that society itself is supported by men and women who choose honesty over convenience, duty over selfishness, and principle over popularity. A life lived uprightly strengthens not only the individual, but also the community around him.
The Work Continues
“On the Level. By the Plumb. That’s the Work.”
These words are simple, yet deeply meaningful. They point to the daily labour of every Mason: to meet others with fairness and to conduct ourselves with integrity. This is not work completed in a single evening, nor in a single office, degree, or year. It is the continual work of building the inner temple.
Freemasonry gives us the tools, but each Brother must apply them. The Level calls us to humility and equality. The Plumb calls us to uprightness and truth. Together, they remind us that our conduct in life should reflect the values we profess in Lodge.
May we always strive to meet our Brethren on the Level, stand upright by the Plumb, and continue the work with sincerity, dignity, and purpose.
