About Freemasonry

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and most widely recognised fraternal organisations. It is founded on principles of integrity, friendship, respect, and service to others.

Rather than a religion or a political movement, Freemasonry is a system of moral teaching that uses symbolism and tradition to encourage personal growth and self-improvement.

What is Freemasonry?

At its core, Freemasonry is about becoming a better man — not only in one’s personal life, but in service to family, community, and society as a whole.

Members, known as Freemasons, meet in Lodges where they take part in ceremonies, discussions, and charitable initiatives. These gatherings provide a space for reflection, learning, and fellowship.

Freemasonry welcomes men of good character from all backgrounds, beliefs, and professions, united by a shared commitment to ethical living and mutual respect.

Core Principles

Integrity
Freemasons are encouraged to act with honesty, accountability, and strong moral character.

Respect
All individuals are treated with dignity, regardless of background or belief.

Friendship
Freemasonry builds lifelong bonds through shared values and mutual support.

Charity
A strong emphasis is placed on helping others and supporting communities in need.

How Freemasonry is Structured

Freemasonry is organised into Lodges, each governed by a set of traditions and practices that are consistent across the wider organisation.

In KwaZulu-Natal, Lodges operate under the District Grand Lodge, which forms part of the United Grand Lodge of England — one of the oldest governing bodies in Freemasonry.

While each Lodge has its own character, all share the same foundational principles and structure.
