The Connaught Club – KwaZulu-Natal

The Connaught Club is a central meeting place for Freemasons in KwaZulu-Natal, providing a welcoming and well-appointed environment for Masonic activity, fellowship, and administrative support.

Located in Durban, the Club serves as a hub for lodges across the district, hosting meetings, events, and gatherings that support the continued work and traditions of Freemasonry in the region.

Origins and Formation

The Connaught Club takes its name from the Duke of Connaught, reflecting a long-standing tradition of fellowship within Freemasonry. The original Connaught Club in London was established as a social meeting place for Freemasons, promoting engagement and connection beyond the Lodge room.

Inspired by this tradition, the concept was introduced to KwaZulu-Natal in 2011 following a visit by a London member. An initial informal gathering of newer Freemasons, together with their families and friends, proved highly successful and led to the establishment of the Connaught Club in the Province.

The Duke of Connaught

Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn

Arthur William Patrick Albert; 1 May 1850 – 16 January 1942, was the seventh child and third son of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

A distinguished Freemason, he served as Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England from 1901 to 1939. His leadership and influence played a significant role in shaping modern Freemasonry, and his name continues to be honoured through institutions such as the Connaught Club.

Purposes and Activities

Freemasonry brings people together in a spirit of friendship, respect, and shared purpose. It provides a structured environment where members can grow personally while contributing positively to their communities.
This is also an ideal opportunity for non-masons to meet some of the local Freemasons and ask questions.

Through Lodge meetings, social events, and charitable initiatives, members build lasting relationships and develop a strong sense of belonging. Activities are designed to encourage participation, learning, and mutual support.

Freemasonry also plays an important role in charity, with members supporting local and national causes through fundraising, volunteering, and community engagement.

The Connaught Club provides an informal space for members to gather, connect, and enjoy fellowship outside of regular Lodge meetings. It supports the social fabric of Freemasonry by encouraging conversation, friendship, and a shared sense of belonging.
