Joining Freemasonry

Freemasonry is open to men of good character who are over the age of 21 and who wish to join of their own free will. UGLE describes membership as open to people from all backgrounds, with the aim of helping members become the best they can be and make a positive contribution to society.

Who Can Join?

  • Men over 21
  • Of good character
  • Joining of their own free will

What to Expect

Joining Freemasonry is not about status, influence, or personal advantage. It is about character, values, friendship, and a willingness to grow. Men who enquire about membership are usually looking for something meaningful: a stronger sense of purpose, genuine fellowship, and a principled way of life.

Freemasonry offers all of this within a structure that has stood the test of time. Through Lodge life, members develop confidence, discipline, and a deeper understanding of themselves. They also become part of a community that values respect, integrity, and service to others.

The process of joining normally begins with an enquiry. That first step allows a prospective member to ask questions, learn more about Freemasonry, and decide whether it is right for him. It is important that the decision to join should always be made freely and sincerely.

Please note the following

  1. If you have been convicted by a court of any offence; have been subject to a finding of dishonest or disgraceful conduct; have been disciplined by any professional, trade or other tribunal or are awaiting the outcome of proceedings against you in a criminal court or a professional, trade or other tribunal, you may be precluded from becoming a Freemason.
