History of Freemasonry in KwaZulu-Natal
Freemasonry in KwaZulu-Natal has a rich and established history, shaped by tradition, continuity, and service.
From its earliest beginnings in the 19th century to the present day, the District has developed into a structured and enduring part of Freemasonry in South Africa.
Early Foundations
Freemasonry in Durban can be traced back to the mid-19th century, when early meetings were held by travelling Masons and settlers.
As the region developed, formal Lodges were established, laying the foundation for what would become a structured Masonic presence in KwaZulu-Natal.
Growth and Development
From modest beginnings to a structured Masonic District, the development of Freemasonry in KwaZulu-Natal reflects a legacy of continuity and purpose.
Freemasonry in KwaZulu-Natal traces its origins to 1857, when nine brethren gathered in Durban with the intention of establishing a Lodge.
Meeting at what would later become known as the Masonic Hotel, they laid the foundation for Freemasonry in the region — a symbolic beginning that would shape its future development.
Following their application to the United Grand Lodge of England, a charter was granted in 1858 for Port Natal Lodge No. 738. The Lodge formally began meeting later that year, marking the first structured Masonic presence in Natal.
From these early beginnings, Freemasonry spread steadily across the colony. As Lodges grew in number and influence, the need for coordinated governance became clear.
In 1883, the District Grand Lodge of Natal was formally established under the authority of the United Grand Lodge of England, providing structure, leadership, and continuity to Freemasonry in the region.
Since then, the District has endured periods of change and growth, continuing to uphold the enduring principles of integrity, honour, and brotherly love.

Originally McDonald’s Commercial Hotel, this building later became known as the Masonic Hotel and stood on the site of the present Royal Hotel. It was here, on 29 October 1857, that nine brethren met to discuss establishing the first Masonic Lodge in Natal.
