Frequently Asked Questions
You may have heard the saying “To be one, ask one.” Freemasonry values openness, and genuine understanding often begins with a simple question. This FAQ page is designed to provide helpful insight into the principles, traditions, and experiences of Freemasonry—but it is only a starting point. We warmly invite you to make contact and ask a Freemason directly.
What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is a fraternal organisation that encourages men to live by strong moral principles, develop lasting friendships, and make a positive contribution to society. It uses ceremony and symbolism to teach lessons about integrity, responsibility, respect, and service.
Is Freemasonry a religion?
No. Freemasonry is not a religion and does not replace religion. Men of different faiths can belong to Freemasonry, and members are expected to remain faithful to their own religious convictions. UGLE presents Freemasonry as an organisation with no political or religious affiliation.
Is Freemasonry political?
No. Freemasonry does not engage in party politics, and political discussion does not form part of Lodge life. Its purpose is moral and charitable, not political.
Why does Freemasonry use ritual?
Freemasonry uses ritual and symbolism to teach moral lessons in a memorable and meaningful way. These traditions connect modern Freemasons with a long heritage while helping members reflect on character, duty, and the values they live by.
What happens in a Lodge meeting?
A Lodge is a structured meeting place where members gather for formal business, ceremonies, and fellowship. UGLE explains that Lodge meetings commonly include administration, discussion of Lodge matters, and ceremonies linked to a member’s progress through Freemasonry.
Is Freemasonry secret?
Freemasonry is better described as a society with private traditions rather than a secret society. Its existence, values, charitable work, and public role are open. What is traditionally kept private are certain ceremonial elements and modes of recognition. This is consistent with how public-facing Masonic organisations explain themselves today.
Do Freemasons help the wider community?
Yes. Charity and service are central to Freemasonry. UGLE highlights community fundraising, volunteering, and support for charitable causes as an important part of Masonic life.
Who can join Freemasonry?
UGLE states that membership is open to men over the age of 18 from all backgrounds. Freemasonry looks for men of good character who join of their own free will and who want to grow as individuals while contributing positively to society.
Why do men become Freemasons?
Men join for many reasons. Some are looking for friendship, some for personal growth, some for tradition and structure, and others for the opportunity to serve something larger than themselves. UGLE’s joining pages present Freemasonry as a path of character-building, belonging, and positive contribution.
