This past Sunday marked an auspicious occasion for our Chapter – it was our annual “Ladies Ride,” a cherished tradition within the Widows Sons. Each year, the ladies of our Chapter take the reins, thoughtfully selecting a destination for a group ride that culminates in a shared meal, either breakfast or lunch. This event is more than just a ride. It is a heartfelt gesture of appreciation for the unwavering support they offer throughout the year, often accompanying the men as pillions and contributing to the camaraderie and spirit of our rides.

What makes the Ladies Ride particularly special is the element of surprise. The men are kept in the dark about the final venue until the moment of arrival, adding a delightful sense of anticipation to the day. It’s a tradition that not only honors the contributions of our ladies but also reinforces the bonds of unity and respect that define our Chapter.

This year, the ladies chose “GATVOL,” a vibrant restaurant nestled in Durban North. The venue was a brilliant choice – welcoming atmosphere, beautifully presented food, and a setting that encouraged laughter, storytelling, and connection. We were nine in total this year, and as always, the spirit of fellowship was palpable. These gatherings remind us that we are more than just a riding fraternity – we are a family, bound by shared values, mutual respect, and a deep appreciation for one another

The Ladies Ride continues to be a highlight of our calendar, a day where tradition meets gratitude, and where the road leads not just to a destination, but to deeper connection

On Thursday the 28th of May, the Widows Sons KZN rode up to Clarens in the Eastern Free State to meet their brethren from across South Africa for the start of a truly memorable weekend — the Widows Sons Grand Gathering.

This picturesque town marked the beginning of a journey involving over 50 motorcycles riding in formation from the Free State to the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, stretching for more than a kilometre along the open road.

The Workers Day long weekend in May saw the first national gathering of the Widows Sons South Africa Motorcycle Association. Members from across the country came together in fellowship, united by their shared passion for Freemasonry and motorcycling.

Origins of Widows Sons South Africa

The Widows Sons began in South Africa almost by chance. In 2009, Alan Crawley, a Freemason since the 1980s, visited Canada and encountered the Widows Sons fraternity. After being made an honorary member and receiving his colours, he returned home determined to establish the association locally.

By 2010, the Widows Sons South Africa chapter was formally taking shape, gaining recognition and acceptance within the broader motorcycling and Masonic communities.

The first inaugural ride took place on 18 July 2010, marking the beginning of a growing brotherhood that continues to expand across the country.

Growth and Brotherhood

Today, the Widows Sons South Africa forms part of an international organisation comprising thousands of Freemasons across the world. Chapters represented at the Grand Gathering included:

East Coast KZN – Tyler’s Swords

Central GP – Knights of the Craft

East Rand – Sons of Hiram

West Rand – Knights Templar

Free State – Sons of Solomon

Western Cape – Hiram’s Ashlars

Eastern Cape – Spirit of Hiram

The gathering brought together more than 100 members and their families. The atmosphere was one of camaraderie, mutual respect, and genuine brotherhood.

More Than Just Riding

Widows Sons members are united not only by their love of motorcycles but also by their commitment to Masonic values. The association was originally formed to support widows of Master Masons and continues to play an active role in charitable work.

Members regularly assist widows, support orphanages, and contribute to community initiatives. They also participate in outreach programmes such as Bikers Against Drug Abuse and school awareness campaigns.

A Lasting Impression

The presence of international guests from North America added a special dimension to the gathering. Visitors were deeply impressed by South Africa’s hospitality, landscapes, and the strength of its Masonic brotherhood.

The event stood as a testament to what the Widows Sons represent — unity, charity, discipline, and fellowship.

If you see a rider wearing Widows Sons colours, remember that behind the patch is a Freemason committed to making a positive difference in the world.

Join the Brotherhood

If you are a Freemason in good standing, have a motorcycle over 400cc, and share a passion for riding and fellowship, you are invited to learn more about the Widows Sons.
